Serious injuries and loss of life are frequently blamed on accidents resulting from product failures or equipment malfunctions. Members of S-E-A's Product Failure Analysis Team are experienced in evaluating injuries and property damage allegedly caused by industrial or commercial machinery, retail products, and heavy equipment purportedly incorrectly designed, functioning improperly or altered after purchase by the consumer/user.

Our product failure professionals are civil, mechanical, electrical, biomedical, biomechanical and metallurgical engineers. On occasion lab specialists, technicians and researchers are called upon to assist in analyzing an assumed product failure.

Product Analysis and Testing

Products presented to the S-E-A team are exhaustively examined, both visually and with the most advanced instruments, to determine the presence or absence of material defects. Careful consideration may be given to the original product design and modifications; warnings, labels and instructions; and appropriate safeguarding mechanisms.

Causal Analysis

As necessary, our staff conducts a causation study by reviewing the mode of failure (stress corrosion cracking or intergranular fracture, for examples) and how the product was being used at the time of the failure. Research is carried out to determine if there have been similar failures of the same or similar products.

Industry Standards Review

To remain at the forefront of developments in various disciplines, the S-E-A staff regularly conducts extensive technical research, such as reviews of industry codes and standards (ASTM, Department of Transportation, ANSI, ASME, NEC, and SAE) as well as publications of the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
